Senior football official: Before criticizing others, Europeans "should apologize for their own history"
The chairman of Fifa has stated that western nations should apologize for their own pasts and refrain from criticizing World Cup hosts Qatar.
Gianni Infantino stated during an hour-long news conference on Saturday in Doha that he found it difficult to comprehend the criticism of Qatar about the treatment of migrant workers.
On Sunday, the country's portion of the competition begins.
At a live television program, Mr. Infantino stated, "For what we Europeans have been doing over the world in the previous 3,000 years, we should be apologizing for the next 3,000 years before starting to teach moral lessons to people.
"If Europe genuinely cared about the fate of these individuals, they might establish legal pathways — like Qatar did — for some of these workers to immigrate to Europe and find employment. Give them some hope for the future.
"I find it challenging to comprehend the critique. We must make investments in these people's welfare, education, and future in order to give them more reason for optimism.
"We should all pursue our own education. Although there are many things that are not perfect, reform and change need time.
"This moral lesson is biased and hypocritical. Why hasn't anyone noticed the improvements since 2016?
Mr. Infantino added that criticizing Qatar for any religious differences was not the best line of action when discussing how the West should handle such situations.
"Stop accusing, arguing, and insulting others. You begin interacting. This is what we ought to be doing, he continued.
In response to a last-minute U-turn by football officials to outlaw the selling of alcohol inside stadiums, Mr. Infantino claimed that Fifa and the Qatari government jointly decided to make the change.
"Honestly, I'll sign right away if this is the biggest issue we have with the World Cup. Let me reassure you that every choice made during this World Cup is a result of consensus, he said.
It is argued over and decided upon collectively. There'll be a lot of fan zones. 8:00 to 10:00 You may buy alcohol at more than 200 locations.
"In my opinion, if you cannot drink for three hours each day, you will survive. The same regulations apply in Scotland, France, and Spain regarding the prohibition of beer in stadiums.
Twelve years in preparation, the tournament in Qatar has drawn criticism for the nation's planning efforts.
The first game will take place on Sunday night at Al Bayt Stadium when the hosts face Ecuador. The Netherlands and Senegal are the next opponents for Qatar.
Even though Qatar frequently competes in the AFC Asian Cup, the national squad has struggled in World Cup qualifying matches.
Qatar, the tournament's first Arab host country, automatically qualified because it is the host country.
